Who is it for?

This unit is suitable for all health care practitioners wishing to develop their research skills.

Overview of content:

  • Sources of knowledge, history of research in professional practice
  • Role of research in modern care practice
  • Literature searching
  • Ethics of research: human experimentation, ethical codes, ethical committies
  • A selection of both quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Qualitative versus quantitative debate
  • Statistical analysis
  • Implications of existing research findings
  • Application of research findings to clinical practice
  • Factors affecting uptake of research
  • Role of practitioner researcher. Action research. Strategies to improve research awareness
  • Journal clubs, special interest groups, post basic opportunities, job-share/joint appointments
  • Factors influencing the undertaking of research

What is it about?

This unit is about understanding and reading research and being able to summarise reports succinctly for use in the assessment process.

How does it enhance practice?

This unit enhances practice by providing the professional with the necessary knowledge to be able to critically read and understand research reports and, where possible, make recommendations for change based upon a review of the literature.

Mode of Assessment:

Assignment in which the student critically analyses and evaluates a range of research approaches.
