Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920), a master of European realism, is widely regarded as being Spain's greatest novelist after Cervantes. In the 30 novels which form the core of his achievement, Galdós bears unique witness to the public and private life of Madrid in the years when it began to be a modern city. The project is producing new critical editions of the four Torquemada novels in hard copy and on CD- ROM. Drawing on close co-operation with the Biblioteca Nacional and Universidad Autonoma in Madrid, the Universities of Valencia and the Balearic Isles, Brown University in the USA and the Instituto Cervantes in the UK, its major target audience will be the Spanish-speaking world.
