This is a pilot project funded by a grant from The British Academy and has the following objectives:
- To transcribe, translate and present electronically a selection of primary East Asian texts (drawn from the Humanities and Social Sciences) in order to assess the problems associated with encoding in SGML different types of East Asian text and their English language translations;
- To incorporate a classification within the electronic text, which would enable a user to carry out an analysis, using computer facilitated techniques, of these primary sources;
- To investigate and evaluate the potential benefits to scholars afforded by the presentation of these documents in electronic form.

The projects aims to investigate the problems and opportunities associated with producing an electronic resource of East Asian texts. The textual resource thus produced would be made available in two forms: (a) the original Japanese text; and (b) an English language translation. Since the East Asian languages have undergone significant modification during the past one hundred years, it may be necessary in future to incorporate a third form. That is to say: (a) the original text; (b) a modern translation; and (c) an English language translation. The provision of multiple versions of the same text would enable scholars to investigate the practical application of linguistic shifts from premodern to modern, as well as the alteration over time of, in particular, literary texts. |
