Safety, Security and Maintenance
Security
When locking the bike up, it is preferable to have two locks. Mountain bikes are at high risk of being stolen. If you have quick release wheels, ensure they are both locked on to the cycle stands.
There are different types of lock to buy, with D locks and cable locks being the most popular and widely available.
To find out more about cycle security, you can download the leaflets from the box on the right.
There is also a national bike register scheme, where you can register the bike. Fees start from £5.95 for this service, dependent on the number of bikes registered and the level of registration selected. Stolen bikes can be registered on the stolen cycle register. Please see the link on the right to the Bike Register website for more information.
Bike branding
For extra precautions, you can get a `Recorded Cycle´ form from your local police station or cycle dealer. Photograph the bike and record all its details including make and model of bike, and any distinguishing marks.
If the bike is stolen, you will need a crime reference number to claim from your insurance. Contact your local police station in the unfortunate event of bike theft, and they will guide you through the process.
Insurance
Personal insurance
Insurance is available for personal liability and third party cover for any accidents you may be involved in, or for injuries incurred by yourself or others when you are on a bike. Many companies offer cycle insurance.
Cycle insurance
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate insurance for the bicycle. Bicycles may already be covered under your existing home insurance.
Safety
The University recommends that cyclists wear a helmet.
The Highway Code for Cyclists is available from the link on the right.
Cycle training may increase your confidence and may make your cycling safer. For more information see the link to Sheffield City Council from the box on the right.
Maintenance
It is important to keep the bike in good working order. Our suppliers all offer a free first service during the first few months of the loan. The University also organises regular Dr Bike sessions on the concourse, where the bike will be given a free safety check and minor repairs can be carried out. If the bike needs more serious attention, you will be told what the problem is and what to tell a bike shop when taking it in for repair.
