My thesis aims to fill a gap within the current, London-centric historiography of the history of homosexuality by focusing on the experience of men who lived in the northern provinces of Britain. I will investigate how their experiences reflected or differed from those of men in the capital and also investigate the importance of class and location to how these men understood their lives. To do this I will be taking a social and cultural approach to history that includes using a wide variety of source materials including: newspapers, legal records, letters, oral history interviews, literature and working-class memoirs.
