Domesticity
Humanities Research Institute on 18-19 January 2007
'Domesticity' is a key concept for much current research in both the arts and humanities, and the social sciences. This symposium addresses the nature of domesticity and its limits, its construction through practice, narrative and representation, and the uses of discourses of domesticity in personal and public life. It takes the topic of 'domesticity' – past and present – as a lens through which to address issues of identity, to examine everyday symbolic practices, and to explore the relationship between macro and micro.
Sessions include:
Construction through practice
Boundaries and work
Ins and Outs of the Home
Challenge through Texts
Home and Abroad
Ideology and discourse
Narratives
This is a truly interdisciplinary event. Speakers include those from the Schools of Architecture, Education, Health and Related Research, and Management, and the departments of Geography, Germanic Studies, History, Russian and Slavonic Studies and Sociological Studies.
