"I really enjoyed my history degree at Sheffield and it gave me a strong starting position for my job applications. Many people assume that by studying history you must be going into teaching – I was always adamant that this would not be the case! A high percentage of people at the very top of the business world have history degrees, so it can´t be the airy fairy subject that some BSc students say it is! . " read more

"The Department of History at Sheffield was my first choice when I applied for university in 2000. I enjoyed the variety of the Single Honours History Degree, as it ensured that you studied a breadth of historical periods and events. This was important for me as my ambition was always to be a secondary school History teacher. The course was clearly structured and I always felt supported and encouraged by the teaching staff. However, it was extremely challenging and demanding!" read more

"A degree in History furnishes you with the ability to make an argument well. This is a skill which has proved indispensible to pursuit of a career in law, with Advocacy at its heart. On graduation from Sheffield University, I was awarded two scholarships from Middle Temple Inn to study for a Post Graduate Diploma in Law and then the Bar Vocational Course. After being called to the Bar in 2005, I took the Law Society´s Accreditation Examinations which allowed me to present cases before the First and Upper Tier Tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber. I now work as an in house Advocate for a Solicitors firm based in London." read more

"I work as a Short Film Executive at Lifesize Pictures in Sheffield. Lifesize Pictures manage all of the UK Film Council´s short film schemes. To date these schemes have produced over 700 short films, many of which have won international awards and screened at festivals around the world. I found the History course at Sheffield University very flexible and I was encouraged to study a wide range of topics as well as specialise in areas of particular interest. The most useful skills I learned were to research everything thoroughly, listen to different opinions, and ultimately to question everything and form my own opinions. " read more

"Following graduation (2001) I attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and commissioned into The Royal Welch Fusiliers. I deployed to Iraq in 2004 in command of 30 soldiers. The tour of duty was subsequently made famous by historian Richard Holmes, in his book, Dusty Warriors. By gaining a good degree from a well-respected university, I was able to show future employers that I had the mental aptitude and determination to take on daunting tasks. I remain very proud of my history degree from Sheffield. It is the foundation stone for everything that I have achieved subsequently." read more

"I left Sheffield University in 1993, already having secured a job as an Operational Entrant in the Diplomatic Service. Since then, I've had a huge range of jobs and life experiences and can honestly say that I can count on the fingers of one hand the days I've not wanted to go to work. Not many of my friends can say that of their 16 years in the working world! I found the high expectations of the staff [in History] helped prepare me to work in an environment where excellence is expected and delivered. They taught me not to let any assumption go unquestioned and also they taught me to look for ways in which I could make a genuinely unique contribution and make a difference, both of which I'm still seeking to do. "It's nearly 20 years since I left Sheffield University, but I still look back fondly on my time there. For many people, university is a time when you are working out who you are and developing the abilities and character that will define your life, and it was no different for me. I'm very glad I studied history at Sheffield. I chose to go there because the department had a reputation as one of the best in the country, and it lived up to that billing. The city and university were an enjoyable and relaxed place to spend three years socially. The course was interesting and challenging, and the tutors and lecturers approachable, learned and helpful - and advice from my personal tutor was invaluable in coming to terms with the demands of a history degree." read more
