The University of Sheffield
Department of History

Books and other Learning Resources

There is an expectation that you will need to purchase certain reading materials for each module you take: tutors choose these texts carefully, and always with a view to equalising the cost between different modules offered within the department as much as possible. Most modules require the purchase of a particular textbook or a coursepack of key documents and secondary texts. Further texts may be recommended for purchase. Textbooks are stocked by the University bookshop. The bookshop on campus is Blackwell's University Bookshop, St. George's Library, Mappin Street. There is also a Blackwell's University Bookshop located in the atrium of the Pond Street campus of Sheffield Hallam University. Bear in mind that secondhand copies of many recommended textbooks may also be available, though you may want to check that you have an up-to-date version in cases where a book has gone through different editions.

Many course materials to support your study of a module are made available online. You may find it helpful to print out your own copies of some of these; others you may be happy to read on screen. Your tutor will advise on those cases where it is necessary to print out copies to bring along and refer to in class. This may be relevant in particular in the case of Document Options, where you will sometimes need to have key primary sources in front of you during a seminar discussion.

The associated costs of modules (taking into account the cost of required printing of key materials and the cost of prescribed texts) are monitored by the Department's Committee for Undergraduate Affairs, and are kept in line with recommendations across the University as a whole.
