Single Honours Degrees
BA (Hons) History V100

This course gives you the opportunity to concentrate on the subject of History. History is the world's collective memory, the explanation of our culture and society. The History Department offers an enormous range of modules, covering many different periods, countries and approaches to the past.
Dual Honours Degrees
BA (Hons) English and History QV31

Literature and History are natural partners. In studying them together you will be gaining historical skills that will help you to understand the context in which the great works of literature were written, and literary skills that will serve you well in the study of historical sources.
BA (Hons) French and History RV11

BA (Hons) German and History RV21

BA (Hons) History and Hispanic Studies RV41

BA (Hons) History and Russian RV71

BA (Hons) History with Dutch V1R9

The knowledge of a foreign language is a priceless asset in the study of History. By following a four-year dual honours degree in History and a modern language you will be able to develop your language skills at the same time as you investigate the past. The History Department offers modules concerning the history of France, Germany, Spain, Russia and the Netherlands (although these are not compulsory for students taking dual honours in History and the relevant language). In your language department you will learn about the literature, culture and language of that country, and you will also spend your third year abroad in one of the countries where the language of your choice is spoken.
BA (Hons) History and Philosophy W15

Philosophy is a fascinating subject that explains the nature of human thought through logic and reason. In this degree you will acquire analytical skills and a knowledge of philosophical writings in the Department of Philosophy that will provide a theoretical framework for your study of History. At the same time your History modules will provide you with an understanding of the context in which the great philosophers of the past wrote.
BA (Hons) History and Sociology VL13

If History is the study of past societies, sociology considers the theory of modern society. In this dual honours degree you will learn in the Department of Sociological Studies about patterns of social change, which will give you insights into past societies which you study in the Department of History. Conversely, the understanding of the past which you gain in the History Department will inform the modules which you take in Sociology.
BA (Hons) History and Politics VL12

It is often said that History is past politics, and Politics is present history. This dual honours degree will provide you with the opportunity to investigate contemporary politics and political theory, particularly in Britain and Europe, from the modules which you take in the Department of Politics. You will complement this with the study of the past in the History Department.
BA (Hons) International History and International Politics VLF2

This is a three-year programme based in the Department of History and taught jointly by the Departments of History and Politics. It provides a comparative and international perspective on the world, offering courses on Europe, Africa, South and East Asia, Australasia and the Pacific. The impact of colonialism and imperialism is emphasised. Influential movements and world-views and their origins are also explained. Although the main focus of the degree is modern history and politics, the flexible structure of the degree enables you to choose modules from earlier periods. Our inter-disciplinary curriculum helps you to understand the history of both a wide range of different periods and regions of the world.
BA (Hons) Archaeology and History FV41

This degree allows you to combine the study of two subjects that have a great deal to learn from each other, Archaeology and History. The course gives you the chance to undertake practical archaeological work and to learn about archaeological theory, which will add an extra dimension to the modules that you take in history. In your final year you will undertake a piece of extended research that allows you to combine your knowledge of history and archaeology.
BA (Hons) Chinese Studies and History TV11

BA (Hons) Japanese Studies and History TV21

Never have relations between West and East been more important than today. This new four-year degree, shared with the School of East Asian Studies, allows you to learn either Chinese or Japanese (no previous knowledge required), to discover the history, society and culture of China or Japan, and to spend a year in your chosen country. In the History Department you will be able to choose modules from a full range of British, European, North American and International History courses.

In line with our policy for continuous improvement, courses within the Department are continually being reviewed. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information above but the University can not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions.
