Postgraduate taught courses
The following taught MA courses are currently offered within the Department:
Our Masters degrees foster detailed and critical study of the literatures and cultures of the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds. The beauty of our programmes is their flexibility. Each student completes a dissertation on a topic of their own choosing. Modules are available that develop language skills, for example in Catalan or Portuguese. Directed Reading modules are constructed around the particular research interests of each student and the research specialisms of our academic staff. Previous students have studied science fiction in Spain, the novel under Franco, dictatorship and revolution in Mexico, Latin American cinema. Duration
All MA courses may be taken full-time over one year (12 months) or part-time over two (24 months).
Structure
Students are required complete a total of 180 credits, made up of:
- A dissertation of either 90 credits (research track) or 60 credits (programme track) on a chosen specialist subject;
- Between 15 and 45 credits of research training;
- Up to 75 credits (research track) or 105 credits (programme track) of 15-credit subject-specific modules. These are selected at the beginning of the MA with the advice of the Graduate Tutor and might include modules such as the following: Directed Reading modules; Spanish-American Twentieth Century Literature; Catalan Language and Culture; Political Culture in the Hispanic World; Contemporary Portuguese Language and Literature;
- In some circumstances and where appropriate, students may take modules in other departments.
Taught MA students who plan to progress to an MPhil or PhD follow the Research Track version of the MA. This comprises 90 credits of taught modules and a 90 credit dissertation.
Entry requirements
We usually ask for a British 2:1 degree, or the international equivalent, in any branch of Hispanic Studies. We also consider applications from graduates in other disciplines who have relevant language skills.
International students will be required to demonstrate a good level of spoken and written English. The minimum required is Academic IELTS with a score of 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.5 in each component), TOEFL iBT with a score of 95 or Pearson PTE with a score of 67, language test.
