Studying Human Communication Sciences at Sheffield
At Sheffield we'll give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to build a rewarding career that improves lives. With your specialist knowledge and skills like communication, empathy and problem solving, you'll be perfectly equipped to make a difference in your chosen profession.
Our courses explore speech and language function, and how we can help adults and children with speech and language impairments. We offer three courses: a three-year BSc degree, a four-year BMedSci degree and a distance learning course.
Learn from experts
Our research is internationally recognised and feeds directly into your course. It means you'll be taught by some of Britain's leading experts in the field of human communication. And it means you learn about the very latest insights and techniques in your subject.
We also have strong links with professional bodies, the NHS, specialist schools and specialist charities to keep your course up to date – and help you develop the skills employers prize highly.
In a supportive community
We're a close-knit and friendly community, which means we get to know you. Your year tutors and course director will support and guide you throughout your degree. And you'll have one-to-one support from your personal tutor, who will be your first port of call for any queries at all.
We regularly get together as a department, socially and for more formal matters. It's a chance to mix with other students on your course as well as postgraduates and staff throughout the department. Our student-run HCS society is another opportunity to make friends and keep your social calendar busy.
You're at the heart of it
And of course at Sheffield you'll belong to a much bigger community. You'll join one of the top universities in the UK – and the 2011 University of the Year. Our students think highly of us, too. The 2011 Times Higher survey says we're the university most people would recommend to a friend.
So as a student with us you'll be at the heart of a University that values its students. And a friendly, buzzing city where you can set up home.
Make a difference
Many of our undergraduate students use their specialist knowledge to make a difference in Sheffield. You might decide to get involved in department initiatives like the Tall Ship Project. You'll also have access to one of the biggest volunteering programmes in the country, Sheffield Volunteering.
Whatever your interests, you'll find lots of ways to get involved – and build an impressive CV while you're at it.
