Andy has completed the Postgraduate Diploma Language and Communication Impairment in Children programme.

What kind of context you work in?

I am Teacher-in-Charge of a Speech and Language Centre which is based in a mainstream Primary School. There are 2 Specialist Teachers, 2 T.A.s and 2 Speech and Language Therapists supporting 16 pupils aged 5-11 with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties. They have small group teaching every morning for literacy and numeracy and integrate each afternoon into a mainstream class with adult support. The children also receive intensive speech and language therapy 1:1 and in a small group.

How has the course been useful?

I have found the LACIC course very stimulating and extremely useful for my work. It has significantly increased my knowledge and understanding of children´s speech, language and communication difficulties, whilst also linking theory to daily practice.

What have you enjoyed about the course?

I have enjoyed many aspects of the course, especially the study weekends, which give an opportunity to meet fellow professionals from all over the U.K. and the tutors, who are not only extremely knowledgeable about their subject, but also very friendly and approachable.

Do you think your LACIC qualification will help you in your career?

Gaining the Diploma gives me a greater feeling of expertise in my field, more job security in my current post (as well as an extra S.E.N. point!) and a recognised qualification when I come to apply for other jobs in the future.

Juliet - MSc Language and Communication Impairment in Children Student

What kind of context you work in?

I have been teaching for 15 years - 5 years in mainstream primary before moving to SEN education. My current post is with KS2 in an all-age special school. Communication is a huge issue for our pupils.

Why did you decide to enrol on the LACIC course?

As my knowledge of SEN grew I became increasingly aware of these issues and wanted to learn more about how best to develop these skills in our young people.

How has the course been useful?

The LACIC course is extending my own expertise in this area as well as filling in other gaps in my knowledge about children's learning. I am finding this new knowledge very empowering. LACIC is giving me increased confidence in my own abilities which I know will
be of great benefit when I seek a more senior post in the future..

What advice would you give others who are considering doing this course?

You do need to be committed to the learning as there is quite a lot to do however I am really enjoying the course so far and would recommend it to anyone wanting to develop their knowledge in this area. I have found all the work interesting as well as challenging at times but the LACIC tutors are very helpful and supportive
