Taught Postgraduate Courses

The Department of Human Communication Sciences offers a range of Masters programmes in speech, language and communication, including full-time courses and part-time, distance learning courses.

The MMedSci Clinical Communication Studies programme is a two-year full-time course that leads to a qualification in speech and language therapy. Other programmes are multi-disciplinary in nature. To explore the courses in detail, and for details of how to apply, click the links below:

Graduate Research Degrees

The research degrees offered are Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). We invite enquiries from prospective students wishing to carry out research in language and communication, including research with children or adults who have communication impairments.

The Department has a very active research programme and an international reputation. The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirm the Department's status as a world class centre for the study of Human Communication Sciences with 60% of its research graded in the top 4* (world leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) categories.

Research in the Department focuses on both theoretical questions and clinical needs in relation to speech, language and communication. It is organised into three areas: Clinical Linguistics; Cognitive Neuroscience of Speech and Language; Speech, Language and Literacy: Development, Difficulties and Intervention.

Continuing Professional Development

A range of individual modules and courses are available by distance learning for continuing
professional development.

All speech and language professionals working within the UK must complete CPD in order to
maintain their registration with the HPC. Teachers and other professionals working with individuals
with speech, language and communication difficulties may also find courses within the Department
that meet their CPD requirements.

Fully funded places are available for employees of the NHS in Yorkshire and The Humber and in East Midlands
