Groundwater Protection and Restoration Group

The Groundwater Protection and Restoration Group (GPRG) at the University of Sheffield is an international centre of excellence for applied research on groundwater www.shef.ac.uk/gprg/. We maintain active collaborations with UK and overseas research colleagues and industry. The GPRG seeks to make a practical contribution to the protection and restoration of groundwater through international quality scientific research, supported by engineering applications and wide dissemination. Our wide remit emphasizes pollution and protection issues related to industrial pollutants, urban groundwater, landfills and deep waste repositories. GPRG research is grouped under several overlapping themes : (1) natural attenuation of pollutants, (2) restoration science and practice, (3) biogeochemical processes, (4) catchment science and management. These themes integrate multidisciplinary experimental research and engineering applications through laboratory, field and modelling studies. The group is one of four that comprises the Environmental Engineering Science Centre at the University of Sheffield.

The group delivers five annual short courses for Continuing Professional Development and vocational training, focused on : Introduction to hydrogeology, Fate and transport of pollutants, Unsaturated zone processes, Risk assessment for contaminated land and groundwater, Insitu groundwater remediation, Behaviour and remediation of non-aqueous phase liquids and Natural attenuation of pollutants www.shef.ac.uk/civil/shortcourses/emulw. It also delivers taught postgraduate training on the MSc in Contaminant Hydrogeology and contributes to other environmental MSc courses with colleagues from the Catchment Science Centre, Pennine Water Group, Cell-Mineral Interface group and industry partners www.shef.ac.uk/civil/pg/. We also offer research programmes leading to PhD degree in the broad fields of groundwater pollution and remediation. Our contribution to the University of Sheffield´s Environmental Outreach Programme is recognised in the citation of the Queen´s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education 2000 for the University.
