The University of Sheffield
Department of Germanic Studies

Berliner DomWhat degree programmes can I follow?

At Sheffield, we offer you chances that you won’t get elsewhere. So, as well as an array of options for studying German, you can follow our Dutch Studies courses which are among the best in the UK. We are also the only university in the world to offer Luxembourg Studies at undergraduate level.

Studying German at Sheffield

The Germanic Studies Single Honours course lets you perfect your German skills while exploring Germanic history, society and culture in real depth.

Alternatively, you might choose to divide your time equally between German and another subject. This is known as a Dual Honours degree. Here, alongside German language and culture you will explore another field and develop a new skill-set. You can combine German with another language or take a subject from outside the school, such as economics, politics or music.

You also have the option of taking German (or Dutch or Luxembourgish) as part of the BA in Modern Languages. This is an intensively language-focused programme which will give you fluency in three languages.

Study a new language from scratch

However you choose to study with us, you can also start a new language from scratch. Our Dutch and Luxembourgish classes are outstanding and always prove popular. You can also explore other languages offered in the school, such as Czech, Polish or Portuguese.

How to apply to the University of Sheffield

'And' and 'with' degrees

'And' degrees - for example German and Economics - involve a 50/50 split between the two subjects. You will normally spend an equal amount of time on both subjects and study an equal amount of modules. You will therefore receive an equal amount of credits. These are known as Dual Honours degrees.

More information about Dual Honours

'With' degrees - for example German with Dutch - let you choose a ‘Major’ and ‘Minor’ focus. The first subject (German) is the major part of your degree and the second subject (Dutch) the minor. The split is 2/3 major and 1/3 minor.
