I began my university career at Sheffield in 2001, studying for a BA in French and German with Dutch as a third language. After graduating, I returned in 2006 to study for an MA in Germanic Studies (Research Track). My MA dissertation, ‘From Stasi to Trabi and back again: Searching for an authentic GDR in film’, dealt with representations of East Germany in post-unification cinema. I began my PhD at Sheffield in 2008, which was funded by the AHRC. I also received funding for an extended research trip to Berlin where I recorded interviews with prominent filmmakers. I completed my thesis, ‘Coming to terms with the National Socialist past in teamWorx’s TV Event Movies: Dresden (2006), Nicht alle waren Mörder (2006) and Die Flucht (2007)’, in December 2011 and was awarded the PhD in January 2012.

During this time I have taught on the Dutch beginners course, the postgraduate German for Research module and delivered a series of lectures for the level 2 German Film and Society course. I have been involved in the organisation of the 2011 postgraduate conference ‘Crossing Boundaries’ and with the SOMLAL Visual Culture research network. I have also taken part in various outreach projects and regularly contribute to the department’s theatrical offerings.
