Lector for GermanPhoto Leif Singmann

Born in north western Germany, I pursued studies in English and American Literature, History as well as Communication and Media Studies at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and at Goettingen University. At the University of Kassel, I further specialised in Didactics and Teaching Methods of German as a Foreign Language/Second Language (DaF/DaZ).

Alongside my studies, I gathered work experience during several internships at radio stations in Germany and in the UK. I also had a stint at working with British and German regional newspapers and taught classes at a German secondary school. After graduation, I gained further practical work experience by working as a broadcast assistant and later also as a freelance journalist and author for German public radio. I also worked at a German news agency and I acquired additional work experience by teaching German as a foreign language at two language schools before returning to academia.

My fields of special interest comprise English Literature, Early C19th and Early C20th American Literature, British, German and Transatlantic History, British and German Life & Institutions, Didactics and Teaching Methods in German as a Foreign Language as well as G-E/E-G translation.

As the lector of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Sheffield, my responsibilities include giving advice to students, who would like to study at a German university, and to colleagues, who intend to carry out research in Germany, about the variety of scholarship programmes and funding opportunities offered by the DAAD. I can be approached during my office hours or on appointment.
