Research interests

My research interests focus on late 19th- and early 20th-century German literature and culture. I am particularly interested in women’s cultural and political interventions, in a period when they were excluded from much of public life.

My current project explores feminism and cultural transfer between women artists, especially in the era of suffrage and educational campaigns. Other interests are constructions of sexuality and motherhood in German society and culture, and discourses of class and nation in women's fictional writing in the later nineteenth-century Germany. I am on the steering committee of University of Sheffield’s Centre for 19th-Century Studies, and was previously director of the University’s Centre for Gender Studies in Europe.
