Cedric Krummes
Postgraduate Student Research Officer (from July 2009)
C.Krummes@sheffield.ac.uk
I was born in Luxembourg where I studied English Studies (Literature and Linguistics) for two years, which fed into the completion of a BA in English Language at Bangor University. In 2005, I finished an MA at the University of Sheffield and I submitted my PhD thesis in July 2009. Since my BA dissertation, I have concentrated my research on Luxembourgish Linguistics, a fantastic niche of research opportunities.
PhD Research
My PhD thesis is about modal particles and discourse markers found in Luxembourgish emails, plays, and film-scripts. This involves reading about pragmatic markers, computer-mediated communication, pragmaticalisation and grammaticalisation, and corpus linguistics.

Modal Particles and Discourse Markers in Luxembourgish Emails, Plays, and Filmscripts: a Corpus-Based Approach (abstract)
Computer-mediated Communication
Dr. Astrid Ensslin (Bangor University) and I are currently preparing a paper on emoticons ("smileys") in Luxembourgish emails. Findings have been presented at our GermaniCMC workshop in Banff in April 2009 and at a postgraduate conference in Sheffield in June 2009.
Moving away from descriptive linguistics, Dr. Kristine Horner (University of Leeds) and I are preparing a paper on YouTubers commenting the Luxembourgish language.
Corpus Linguistics
My MA courses included a piece of research using a corpus-based approach to examine the phonological rule of mobile-n deletion in Luxembourgish. My PhD uses two word-corpora in order to examine pragmatic markers. This has fed into my new job position of Research Officer for which I was appointed. I am looking forward to collect German learner corpus data and analyse it.
