I come from Manchester and studied at the University of Manchester as both an undergraduate and a postgraduate student. I completed an MA in translation studies at Manchester in 2005 and I am currently finishing my PhD thesis in sociolinguistics.

Prior to beginning postgraduate study at Manchester, I lived in Austria where I held a position at the University of Vienna Language Centre. During my role as coordinator for English at the Language Centre, I designed English language learning programmes and courses, whilst being one of the teachers and an examiner for TELC (The European Language Certificate). My experience in Austria was an influential and formative one, having a direct impact on the selection of my current PhD topic.

Whilst studying as a postgraduate at Manchester, I was also active as a teacher, preparing postgraduates for reading German academic texts and teaching undergraduates German grammar and translation.

I began my current position at the University of Sheffield in 2009, where I am teaching linguistics and language modules.

My research interests focus on language variation and language attitudes. I am particularly keen on comparing how perceptions of speakers change, depending on which variety the speaker is using. My PhD research is comparing language attitudes in Vienna and in Manchester to investigate whether there is a consistent pattern of language attitudes between them. I have presented papers on my research at various conferences and meetings, including the CUTG (Nottingham 2007) and the BAAL conference (Swansea 2008).
