I originally chose to study at Sheffield because of the unique degree offered. Studying Law with German allows me to pursue my interest and enthusiasm in German, whilst graduating with a qualifying law degree.
Having attended the open day at the University, my decision to study at The University of Sheffield was strongly confirmed. Not only did the University have a great atmosphere, but the city as well. Sheffield is a great, dynamic and diverse city, where there is always something to do or something to see. Not too big to get lost and not too small to get bored in. There is truly something for everyone in Sheffield.
The University itself is great and the Germanic Studies department is a wonderful department to be a part of. It is an extremely friendly department, where your learning and development is of the utmost importance. The courses offered are numerous and really are an eye-opener to what you can achieve and learn. When I first started, I did not believe I could possibly learn as much as I have or develop my language skills as much as I have. However with guidance and encouragement I have exceeded my expectations.
Not only does the Germanic Studies department place great emphasis on your academic development, but they also place great importance on your personal development at University. Numerous activities are organised throughout your time at University, for example, German plays and German speaking weekends. The German Society, the Deutscher Verein, also organises a number of activities and socials throughout the year; all greatly contribute to your personal development. I certainly feel the skills I have learnt have better equipped me for life outside University and will most certainly aid me in my future as a criminal law barrister.
