The Dual Honours Degree in German and Music
The importance of music in German culture and the dominance of classical music by composers from the German-speaking countries - from Bach to Stockhausen, via Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Mahler and so many others - makes German the ideal language to study in combination with music.
Sheffield, with its large and thriving Departments of both Music and German, together with the vibrant artistic life of a great city, is an ideal place to pursue such a degree.
We do not at the moment offer interdisciplinary modules, but we strongly encourage students to make connections between the two subjects in the course of their studies, for instance by working on music-related topics in German literary or film-studies courses, or by studying German composers in Music.
Your Dual Honours programme in German and Music will also include a full year abroad, which can be spent at a German or German-speaking university or on work placement (either in a commercial setting or as an assistant teacher).
The German-speaking cities offer a great range of musical facilities which you can enjoy; and, at your German university, you can include courses in music or musicology in your studies.
If you choose a work placement, a placement involving music can be sought, and you can research a year-abroad project or dissertation on a musical topic.
Dual Honours Germanic Studies and Music provide you with two very different but similarly important and distinctive technical skills, as well as giving you the training in analysis and analytical writing which comes with an Arts degree.
It is a highly marketable combination of skills that stands our students in good stead for the world of employment.
