The Dual Honours Degree in French and German

The Department of French and the Department of Germanic Studies welcome applications for the Dual Honours Degree in French and German. A Dual Honours Degree in French and German is a classic, highly respected and much sought-after combination.
Interdisciplinarity is a key element in our approach to degree programmes. As well as offering a huge variety of topics and topic areas in both French and German Studies, students can complement French and German with the study of the language and society of the neighbouring Benelux countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The Centre for Luxembourg Studies is unique to Sheffield.
Many courses offered in the French department at Sheffield make important reference to Germany and Germanic culture(s) as well as developing linguistic and other skills across both languages. If you wish to study specific connections between French and German society, you can choose from courses such as the following:
La politique et la fiction dans les années trente;
Images of the Occupation;
Twentieth-Century French Literature and Thought;
Monarchy, Revolution and Republic;
Crime and Fiction in French Literature;
Interpreting
Similarly, if you would like to explore French connections in German and Germanic language and society, you can pursue these interests particularly in the following German Studies options at Sheffield:
German Culture and Ideas from the Enlightenment to the Present Day;
Development of the German Language from Earliest Times to the Present Day;
Deutsche Literatur und Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert;
Introduction to Luxembourgish Language and Culture
However, none of these courses is compulsory, and students wishing to vary their diet may choose freely from a wide range of other options on French and German politics, history, philosophy, literature, linguistics, economics and cinema.
