Access of the urban poor to housing accommodation: Accessibility and Affordability Index

I graduated from Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria with a single honours degree in Geography. After graduation, I took up an appointment as an Assistant Lecturer with State College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies in the Department of Social Science. After a short while, I went back to the same University for a postgraduate programme leading to an award of Masters Degree in Land Resources.

On completion of the postgraduate programme, I went back to the college and resumed my job as a Lecturer where I spent some good number of years. However in 2000 when the State Government established a State University, I was given an appointment in the Department of Geography under the Faculty of Environmental Science. Therefore I joined the services of the University in 2001 and I have been working there before my enrolment for the PhD programme of the University of Sheffield.

The University decided to sponsor me for the PhD programme so as to strengthen the academic qualifications of members of staff in the department. Therefore on successful completion of this programme, I will return back to the University and resume my responsibilities.

My research

My current research is on Urban Housing in metropolitan city of Kano, Nigeria and it is primarily concern with housing policies the government implemented in the state at different times with a view to determine the suitability, success and problems encountered in the implementation of such policies. It is aimed to enhance opportunities of the marginalised group among the urban population to have access to decent and affordable housing accommodation. It would equally consider new trends in the housing sector of the urban metropolis where the research is intended to be carried out.
