University Careers Service
The University Careers Service web pages (see link right) contain a wealth of information; a good starting point is the series of Careers Talks Online which last about 10-12 minutes each and cover topics such as researching careers, CV writing, filling out application forms and preparing for interview.
Prospects
Prospects is a national careers website (see link right) for students and graduates. The site provides comprehensive information and advice about careers, jobs and employment and postgraduate study. Also featured is My prospects which provides personalised advice and guidance and incorporates an email vacancy notification service.
Getting "More" Out of Your Degree
The University offers a wealth of opportunities for developing skills and interests outside of your academic studies many of which will provide you with skills and experiences which employers will value. Examples include becoming involved with the department, as a representative on departmental committees, volunteering or helping run a club or society. Further details on the range of opportunities are available on the "More..." website (see link right)
There are also two University schemes which allow you to gain recognition for the skills gained and work done in extra-curricular activities:
Skills for Work Certificate
Designed to help you use your experience gained from work to demonstrate to future employers that you have the necessary skills to function in the workplaceThe Sheffield Graduate Award
A broader qualification which by giving you valuable and sometimes challenging experience in areas including enterprise, work experience, community volunteering and international relations, proves that you are not only academically competent, but someone whose mature, outward looking and positive outlook will be a real asset to any organisation.
Sheffield Graduate Development Planning
Sheffield Graduate Development Planning (SGDP) is a scheme which helps you plan your personal development and keep a record of your achievements while at University. It is intended to cover three areas:
- Academic development
- Career development
- Personal development
SGDP is a personal process in which you reflect on past achievements, think about future goals and decide on the strategies for achieving those goals, assisted by regular meetings with your Personal Tutor. Some additional material to help in this process is available via The Geography Hub pages on MOLE.
