Ana Paula qualified as a Civil Engineer at the State University of Campinas (Brazil). She gained a Masters in Engineering at the University of Tokyo (Japan) where she also obtained her PhD in Environmental Engineering (2009), on "Modelling Waste Prevention Behaviour and Application to Reduce Household Solid Waste", in which her work examined the waste prevention behaviour of residents in Sao Paulo to gain a better understanding of the impact of the behaviour on solid waste management policies. In 2011 she obtained a Marie Curie Fellowship and moved to Sheffield.

Research Interests

Waste prevention, public policies, reduction and consumption behaviours and, sustainability

Current Research

My work is concerned with waste prevention with regard to individual behaviour around consumption, reduction, reusing and recycling practices. On my current research, I am studying the waste prevention behaviour of the citizens of Sheffield and Brazil, and I will compare all results. In addition, I aim to determine how public policies can keep the behaviour of citizens in mind so that the amount of solid waste that is generated can be decreased. My research combines around broad scientific areas, such as engineering, geography and psychology. I am consciously seeking to bring an interdisciplinary approach to bear with all these areas on my work.
