Welcome to the Department of Geography's Prospective Undergraduate pages.
Geography is a key academic discipline, cutting across the natural and social sciences, and exploring what shapes the world around us, as well as us as part of it. The Department of Geography at Sheffield is one of the largest geography departments in the country and, according to the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, well within the top ten geography departments in the UK.
We were given an "Excellent" rating (the highest possible) in the last Teaching Quality Assessment and our courses are amongst the most sought after in the UK. We are also proud of our student satisfaction rates, with at least 90% of Geography students being satisfied or very satisfied with the Sheffield experience*.
Our teaching at Sheffield is informed by wide-ranging research interests in both human and physical geography. On the one hand, human geography staff are at the forefront of debates about globalisation, development, inequality, and culture and identity; on the other, physical geography staff undertake cutting-edge research into climate and environmental change in environments all across the globe.
This section of our website gives you more information on the department, our courses (including our Dual Honours and Environmental Science degrees), how we teach, and some of the opportunities that are open to you as a student. It supplements our undergraduate brochures (see links, above-right), and hopefully answers many of the questions you have about the application process.
