Applying for a PhD.
Applications
Having consulted the Current Opportunities pages and chosen a research topic, please apply online via the online application form. To ensure the most rapid processing of your application, could you also please ask your referees to email their references to: geo-apply@sheffield.ac.uk.
As part of your application please ensure that you state the title of the chosen project and the proposed supervisor(s). If you are applying for a project of your own choosing we ask you please to upload a brief research proposal, approximately two sides long, as a "Course Supporting Document" within the application.
Please note that an offer of a place does not constitute an offer of funding to support your research. The page on Fees and Funding provides information regarding sources of funding, which cover fees and maintenance.
Timings
Successful candidates are usually expected to start their studies in September, however we do appreciate that some funding agencies run to different timings in which case we can accommodate different start dates. In general we recommend that applications are made not less than six months before the proposed start. In practice, however, the application schedule may need to be rather earlier, should the candidate wish to apply for scholarship funding; in this case please consult the Fees and Funding pages before applying.
PhD entry requirements
Candidates will need at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree in Geography or a related subject, and offers to final year undergraduates are conditional on this requirement. A strong Masters degree would be an asset to an application, but this is not a necessary criterion. International students seeking clarity on entry requirements for their own countries should please consult the Prospective International Students pages.
For candidates for whom English is not the first language or who do not possess a degree taught in the English language there are minimum English language requirements. If these have yet to be met, they will be made conditions of any offer made.
IELTS: Average of 7 or above, with at least 6 in each component
TOEFL (iBT): Score of 100 or better
