The International Dimension.
When you come to Sheffield you join an international community. Students on our courses benefit from strong international links in terms of research and fieldwork, and have the opportunity to study abroad for part of their degree without extending the duration of their course.
An international community
The University of Sheffield’s global reputation for teaching and research attracts students from over 120 countries and our Geography courses attract students from Europe to China and West Africa to South East Asia. As well as being the home department to many international students, Geography hosts visiting students each year from many European countries and further afield. The international connections of Geography staff made through research collaboration on global issues reach in excess of 50 countries worldwide, from Latin America to sub-Saharan Africa, and the Arctic to Australia.

An international experience
We are committed to providing a global learning and teaching environment in which all students benefit from an international dimension to their studies. The nature of Geography means students on all our courses engage with issues and challenges with strong international relevance, and intercultural perspectives feature prominently in our programmes. In addition, most students attend international field classes or travel to locations such as Iceland, Ghana and Japan to undertake their own independent research.
Why is an international experience important?
International experiences encourage our students to appreciate the global perspectives of Geography and equip them to make a difference in a complex world. Notably, the forces of globalisation and global opportunities for employment and further study means it is essential that graduates develop cross-cultural awareness, respect for a multi-cultural ethos, and the capabilities to perform effectively in the world beyond the University.
