Why did you choose Sheffield?
Sheffield always appealed to me, right from a young age. When it came to applying, I knew the second I stepped on the Paternoster lift in the Arts Tower building that Sheffield would be my first choice- I loved the city, the Union, and the people that I met from the department. When it came to choosing where to complete my Masters, I knew that staying in Sheffield was the only choice- the department have looked after me so well over the years and with such an amazing academic and research record for French, Sheffield won hands down!
Were you nervous about starting university?
Before I came to Sheffield, I wasn't too worried about starting but after the first lecture, I knew I was going to be challenged academically. If ever I had any questions, either general or more specific, there was always someone in the department to point me in the right direction.
What was the atmosphere like in the French Department?
I have always felt so comfortable within the department- the lecturers treat you more as an equal than the standard teacher/pupil relationship. Over time, because you see them so often, they become more like friends and I would have no problem going to any of them if I had any issues, be them academic or personal.
What was your favourite module?
My favourite module at undergraduate level was Contemporary French Feminist Theory in my final year. It may sound a bit daunting but actually it really allowed me to connect with French culture and philosophical thought, and I found it very engaging although it was challenging. It inspired me to continue on to do my MA and has even inspired my PhD application.
What are your plans for the future?
I have applied to do my PhD in Sheffield, researching the travel writings of Simone de Beauvoir. The department gave me so much support and help during the application process and we're just hoping now that I secure funding.
So you've enjoyed your time at Sheffield?
Definitely. If you want a well-rounded degree course with a solid grounding in both French language and culture, then come to Sheffield. The facilities, the Union and the city are fantastic and as far as courses and departments go, I don't think you can do much better than Sheffield.
