International Conference

Contemporary Algerian Cultures

The University of Sheffield (UK) will host an international conference on
contemporary Algerian cultures in 2010. The conference will coincide with a major festival of contemporary Algerian culture, including music, cinema, contemporary visual arts, sport and literature, scheduled to take place in a variety of venues across the city of Sheffield in June 2010.

Confirmed keynote speakers:

Professor Benjamin Stora (Professor of History of the Maghreb at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales - INALCO - Paris.

Dr Rabah Soukehal, Strasbourg-based writer and author of Le Roman Algérien de la langue française and L'Ecrivain de langue française et les pouvoirs en Algérie.

Abdelkrim Bahloul, film director. Films include Le Soleil assassiné and Le Voyage à Alger.

The conference will address all aspects of contemporary Algerian culture, including art, music, media, literature, publishing, theatre, photography, performance, sport and cinema. The focus will be on cultural production and identities in Algeria, although will also explore Algerian diasporic cultures, Berber cultural production and amazighité.
