Channel: An exhibition of contemporary art from France, Quebec and the UK

The CHANNEL exhibition emerged from a Knowledge Transfer project directed by Dr Amanda Crawley Jackson in the Department of French in collaboration with Cupola Contemporary Art (Sheffield).
It was funded by the University of Sheffield's Knowledge Transfer Funding initiative, Arts Council England, DLA Piper, Institut Français (London), the Alumni Foundation and the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Sheffield.

The exhibition ran from May to June 2006 at Cupola (Hillsborough), Flowers in the Window (Surrey Street) and Sylvester Space (Cultural Industries Quarter). It dealt with the themes of nomadism, migration, residence and settlement, exploring the ways in which individuals and groups inhabit and experience space; how space inflects identity; how space can also be a 'non-space' or an 'other' space. The artists came from a variety of backgrounds - British, French, Algerian and Québécois. They work in France, Canada, the UK and between countries. The plurality of their identities undermines the idea of there being a 'French' art. The exhibition sought therefore to open up a debate regarding the space of practice and creation, and how this contributes to a sense of identity through networks and channels.

The exhibition included a festival of short films from France, organised by Jude Goldrei.
