Degree Programmes : an Overview

We offer a very broad spectrum of degree programmes that involve the study of French language and culture. These include:

Single Honours degree programmes

These programmes are aimed at students who want to specialise either in French language and culture or in European languages.

The BA in French Studies offers students the choice of devoting 100% of their time to French in the second and final years, or of combining French with a subsidiary subject in another department. The BA in Modern Languages (BAML) allows students to study French as either a major or a minor subject in combination with two other languages.

Dual Honours degree programmes

These degree programmes allow students to combine the study of French with a wide range of disciplines, including other modern languages, arts and humanities subjects (including music), economics and management, politics, journalism and even computer science.

In Dual Honours programmes students normally spend 50% of their time on each subject, and both subjects count equally towards the degree. Dual degrees are differentiated from Major/Minor degrees (see below) by the word "and" in their titles: English and French, French and Russian, French and Philosophy and so on.

Major/Minor degree programmes

These programmes allow students to study two subjects in unequal combination, with more emphasis on one component than on the other. French can be combined with a range of other subjects including Czech, Dutch, Polish, East Asian studies and Law.

Major/Minor degrees can be identified by the word "with" in their titles: French with Japanese, Law with French. The first subject listed in the title is always the major subject.
