Prospective postgraduates
The Department of French offers a range of possibilities to students who are interested in postgraduate study.
Our MA in French Studies (Research Track) is a flexible programme that allows students to combine in-depth study of key areas of French literature and culture with different levels of research training, according to whether or not they plan to go on to do an MPhil or PhD.

Our academic staff can offer MPhil/PhD supervision on a wide variety of topics within our major research areas:
- French Literature and its context, particularly the literature of the Middle Ages and the 18th and 20th centuries
- Film studies, including both French and Algerian cinema
- Sociology, including gender studies, the informal economy and social exclusion
- Cultural history, popular culture and history of ideas
- Theatre and visual arts

The Department is conveniently located in the new Jessop West building adjacent to the Information Commons and a short walk from the Western Bank Library, which has extensive holdings in specialist research areas. Facilities for research students are provided in Jessop West and in the Graduate Research Centre (a short walk away).
We have very close links with the University of Sheffield's award-winning Humanities Research Institute (HRI), housed in a purpose-built complex opposite Jessop West.
University Open Days
Each session, we hold a University Open Day when prospective postgraduate students can come and visit the staff and students and
- find out more about the course(s) you are interested in studying in the
Faculty of Arts and Humanities - find out about our facilities and services for Postgraduate communities
- find out about funding, accommodation and the application process
The next University Open Day will take place on Tuesday 6th December 2011. You can sign up for this or for one of the University-wide postgraduate visit afternoons via the link below.
