Baudelaire in the City poetry reading and music
Readings of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal and Petits poèmes en prose in French and English.
Convened by Dr Maxime Goergen and Dr Helen Abbott, with discussion led by Dr Amanda Crawley Jackson, as part of the French Research Seminar Series 2013 'The Arts and the City: 19th-century France in Sheffield'.

The French Play 2013: Les Affaires sont les affaires
The French Play returns 17-19 April 2013 with LES AFFAIRES SONT LES AFFAIRES by Octave Mirbeau.
In twenty-four hours, the business tycoon, Isidore Lechat attempts to fleece two naïve engineers; to marry off his daughter to his debt-ridden noble neighbour; and to entertain dignitaries to get elected as MP. Yet Lechat hasn’t reckoned on his daughter’s free spirit, his wife’s nerves, the nobleman’s scruples and his playboy son’s recklessness.

National Teaching Prize for Eighteenth-Century Studies for Dr David McCallam
Dr David McCallam has been named as joint winner of the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies Teaching Prize 2013 for an innovative theatre project which took four students from his final-year module on the French Enlightenment to perform an abridged version of Marivaux’s play, La Fausse Suivante (1724), at a colloquium-festival in Montpellier in April 2012.

Film Bites series on Jacques Audiard
Dr Julia Dobson presents the March 'Film bites' Showroom series on Jacques Audiard.
A series of three Audiard films hosted by the Showroom cinema in Sheffield will be presented by Dr Julia Dobson, who specialises in contemporary French film and has published on Audiard. The film series runs over three weeks:

French Research Seminars Spring 2013 "The Arts and the City: 19th-Century France in Sheffield Today"
We're delighted to announce our exciting French Research Seminars for Spring 2013: 'The Arts and the City: 19th-Century France in Sheffield Today'
A series of talks and events organised in collaboration with the University of Sehffield Concert Series, Sheffield Chamber Orchestra, Occursus Reading Loop, the PlastiCities project, and the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies, featuring Dr Helen Abbott (Sheffield), Dr Maxime Goergen (Sheffield), Dr Greg Kerr (Glasgow), and Prof. Mary Orr (Southampton) entre autres. All events are open to staff, students and members of the public.
Events run from Monday 25th February 2013 to 18 May 2013 - put the dates in your diaries now!

Communities study group
"Communities" study group
As part of the the study group on "communities" organised by Dr Audrey Small, visiting scholar Dr Mohar Chaudhuri from the University of Calcutta will be delivering a paper on the 20th of February, 3.30pm in the Alfred Denny Building, Room A225.
Her paper title is: “Mythological mothers in the novel Sita Theke Shuru by Nabaneeta Debsen and Le Pique–Nique sur l’Acropole by Louky Bersianik”
She will speak in English, for 20 minutes.

French Research Seminar Series kicks off on 30 October 2012
The Department of French Research Seminar Series kicks off on 30 October 2012 with our very own Dr Audrey Small presenting on Francophone publishing:
“Works written in French should be taken to be published in Paris”: the absence of francophone literature.
ALL are welcome to attend (JW G03, 6-7pm).
There are two other seminars this Autumn - Dr Will Higbee (Exeter) speaks on Rachid Bouchareb's Hors-la-loi (21 November 2012, 5pm JB SR116), and Dr Catharina Peersman speaks on Language use and perception in Flanders (11 December 2012, 6pm, JW G03).

Congratulations to Dr Julia Dobson who has just published her latest book Negotiating the auteur: Dominique Cabrera, Noémie Lvovsky, Laetitia Masson and Marion Vernoux with Manchester University Press.

New publication by Dr Catharina Peersman
Congratulations to Dr Catharina Peersman, who has recently arrived in the French Department at Sheffield, on the publication of her first book L’essor des langues vernaculaires dans les chartes de Ninove. Perspectives sociolinguistiques sur l’essor et l’emploi de l’ancien français dans les chartes de l’abbaye 1137-1350 with Presses Académiques Francophones.

New book on Baudelaire and song by Dr Helen Abbott
Dr Helen Abbott publishes a new book on Baudelaire and song called Parisian Intersections: Baudelaire's Legacy to Composers, looking at the relationship between poetry and music, and between poets and musicians in 19th-century Paris. She focuses on different song settings of Baudelaire's poem 'La Mort des amants', and the book has an innovative companion SoundCloud website with recordings of the songs analysed in the study.

Congratulations to two members of French staff who have won awards at the Sheffield Students' Union Academic Awards 2012! Dr Amanda Crawley Jackson wins the Employability Award, and Dr Audrey Small wins the Student Experience Award. We're delighted and hugely proud of their success!
