French Studies at Sheffield

French has been part of the academic portfolio at Sheffield for more than 100 years. We are conscious of our traditions, but have also moved with the times and are now one of the most forward-looking and innovative departments in the country.

The Department of French now forms part of the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics and works closely with the other modern language departments to provide a first-class experience for students.

We offer a very wide range of courses at undergraduate level, including a Single Honours degree for those who are keen to specialise in French, and Dual Honours degrees for students who want to combine the study of French with another modern language, another Arts subject such as English or History, or subjects in other faculties, such as Law or Journalism. We also contribute to the School-based BA in Modern Languages, which allows students to study three languages to degree level.

At postgraduate level, we offer a Masters degree in French Studies, contribute to the Mundus Masters programme, and provide supervision for PhD students across a broad spectrum of research specialisms.

Excellence in teaching and research

Our teaching is highly rated in the National Student Survey, and is noted for its use of innovative approaches and the latest learning technologies. Several members of staff have been awarded grants to enhance different aspects of their courses; one colleague has received a prestigious Senate Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.

The Department is very highly rated for research. The results of the Research Assessment Exercise for 2008 show that for the proportion of research publications judged world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, the French Department at the University of Sheffield is second only to Oxford.
