Forthcoming events

In Summer 2012 the Faculty Forum successfully applied for funding from the University's "Robert's Funding". The money has enabled the forum to put on a series of events, focussed over the spring semester, designed to support the development of broader, transferable skills for PGR social-science researchers. The Robert's series was officially launched to all new Doctoral Researchers in October 2012 at a launch event in the ICOSS, and details for the forthcoming events in the series, as well as links to sign up forms are provided below.

About Roberts funding

In 2002, Sir Gareth Roberts published a seminal report "SET for success" (Roberts, 2002) following concerns from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Department for Trade and Industry, and the Department for Education and Skills that there was a shortage of supply of highly skilled individuals, particularly in the Science and Engineering disciplines.

The report raised particular concerns over the relevance of doctoral researchers training to industry and the development of transferable skills. Roberts also sought to improve the support for researchers in the development of a clear career plan whether they were interested in academia, industry or research associate positions.

As a direct consequence of this report, the UK government, through RCUK set up a new funding scheme, known as "Robert's funding", to support the development of transferable skills and career path development amongst doctoral and post doctoral researchers in the UK.
