Discover STEM

Discover STEM is a joint widening participation project between the faculties of Science and Engineering. A cohort of around 60 Y12 students from 25 local and regional schools will visit the University on 3-4 occasions per year during their 6th form. They take part in practical taster sessions and lectures, and also receive support and guidance in applying to and being successful at university, through a range of study skills workshops and information sessions.

Students apply to be on the programme via their school and have been selected on the basis of their A level subject choices, academic ability, and widening participation critera. This is an ongoing programme with the aim to work with Y10 students in the future. Similar programmes already run in Medicine (SOAMS), dentistry (ADOPT), Law, Architecture and Accountancy.
For more details about the scheme please see the website below.

If your department could host a subject specific workshop for these students (approx. 1.5 hours for 20 students) or give a 30 minute mini lecture then please be in touch with Claire Wilkinson.  2013 visit days are 13th March, 24th April and 3rd July.  Acadmic sessions usually take place in the afternoon.
