SURE is developed in conjunction with Medical School PGR committees drawing on expertise from senior academic leads.

Dr Martina Daly is the Postgraduate Research Lead, and Chair of the Medical School Graduate Research Committee which develops, administers and monitors the assessment of graduate research student progress. Martina, who has a longstanding interest in PGR programmes, and in devising ways to improve the PGR experience, works to develop and steer the SURE programme. Adding the training and development expertise of Dr Lucy Lee, we take a research-led approach to developing researchers into the supervisory role.

As part of the Think Ahead Programme we offer the SURE scheme. Through funded summer placements, the scheme provides research associates with opportunities to manage their own research project, and gives students vital lab experience.

Research staff are invited to apply for funding to run a 6-8 week research project.

  • Recruiting students: from shortlisting applications through to interviewing the candidates.
  • Grant writing: skills training plus support in applying to external funders, enhancing your funding profile.
  • Training workshops in becoming a more effective researcher, research manager and better supervisor for your student
  • Assistance on managing your research budget and navigating the systems

Students

Second year undergraduate (or 3rd year masters) students are eligible to apply for a summer research placement in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health.

You will get a taste of a career in a research environment by undertaking a 6-8 week project. This will enhance your employability through the following experiences:

  • Competitive application process. Developing your CV, covering letter and interview skills
  • Co-application for research funding
  • Paid work in a lab/research environment
  • Use of cutting edge techniques and equipment
  • Scientific report writing and scientific presentations
