Dr Kay Guccione - Researcher Mentoring and Coaching

I design and develop the University's researcher mentoring programmes, creating tailored mentoring and coaching programmes and partnering research staff with academic and non-academic mentors. I work to ensure that our programmes are aligned to each Faculty's strategy for research, as well as to national policy on development of research careers, and sector best-practice. I also lead on developing the new Industrial Knowledge Forge programme.

Coming to researcher development following a PhD and post-doc experience in molecular biology, I spent the last two years developing leading training programmes for research staff and helping to shape policy related to research career progression. My particular areas of expertise are in developing research-led mentoring and coaching programmes; engaging research students and staff with leadership development; and in creating community-led learning. I provide consultancy in the design and development of:

• --> Research staff/student associations
• --> Researcher mentoring/coaching programmes including delivering training in mentoring skills
• --> Team development and team planning activities (including MBTI)

I have current research collaborations with Sheffield Hallam University, and the UK Research Staff Association (part of Vitae). My own research is on-going in informing my work and my research interests include:

• Coaching as a developmental process for writing the PhD Thesis
• Strategy and best-practice in evaluation of mentoring within higher education
• The impact evaluation of training and development initiatives for researchers

I have two formal mentors and I am a mentor to students at the University of Derby. I am also currently a graduate student at the University of Derby studying for a professional MA in Leadership and Coaching. I work 1:1 with clients at all levels (inside and outside the academic environment) to support them in developing leadership capabilities, and facilitate groups, teams and committees through times of change, restructure and in future planning.
