The University of Sheffield
Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health

Working with Schools and the Community

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health is engaged in a number of important activities to encourage students into the study of Health disciplines. These programmes are targeted at pupils who may not otherwise consider a University course or a career in health.

SOAMS

The University of Sheffield´s Outreach and Access to Medicine Scheme (SOAMS) makes a career in medicine a possibility for able students from all backgrounds.

A number of years ago the University was awarded additional places on the MBChB degree for students who have the ability to become good doctors, but who would not normally consider Higher Education as an option open to them. These places are reserved for students who successfully complete the SOAMS scheme.

Guiding you to a career in medicine

SOAMS is for Year 9-13 students with an interest in medicine, but who would not normally consider Higher Education as an option for them. The scheme provides support and guidance through a range of exciting activities which aim to raise awareness, aspirations and levels of achievement.

ADOPT

This two-year programme is for Year 12 students who are interested in a career in dentistry, as a dentist, hygienist or therapist.

Our aim is to encourage students from backgrounds which are under-represented in higher education. We want to help them overcome the barriers that might discourage them from applying for a place at university. These barriers might be:

  • Young people who are the first generation of their immediate family to study at university.
  • Few young people from their area go to university
  • Personal circumstances make it more difficult for them
