Students make friends with their neighbours
Students and staff from the University have been getting to know their neighbours by taking part in a unique project organised by SheffieldVolunteering.
As part of the 'Love Where You Live' project, students who live on Harcourt Road and The Nook in Crookesmoor spent a weekend painting and gardening with their neighbours. The Estates department also lent a helping hand by sending a team from its Property Services division to help students and residents cut back overgrown gardens.
SheffieldVolunteering provided free pots and plants so that students and local residents could work together to improve the appearance of their gardens. Landlords in the area were also asked to play their part by clearing building debris, making repairs and ordering bins.
"The project is a fantastic idea and it was great to see so many students turn out on the day," said Kay Graham, one of the residents who took part in the project. "I really enjoyed chatting to the students and I was very impressed when the University's Estates team turned up with hedge trimmers and helped us neaten up the area. The area looks so much tidier and attractive now."
SheffieldVolunteering also provided paint so that students and local residents could get creative and liven up their wheelie bins with a splash of colour.
Stella McHugh, from SheffieldVolunteering, who has been involved in organising the project, said: "We ran this project for the first time at the beginning of the year and we were delighted with how many residents and students decided to take part and the friendships that were formed during the project."
She added: "This term's expanded project was yet again a great success, with more than 77 students and residents taking part. The beauty of this project is that a lot of worthwhile jobs get done but at the same time students and local residents get to know each other and have fun."
