Birthday Honours
A professor from the University's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences has been recognised for his achievements in the Queen's Birthday Honours, receiving a knighthood for services to Biological Science.
David Read, an Emeritus Professor at the University, has spent the last 40 years working at Sheffield and is also Biological Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society. His main research activities are in the areas of plant and fungal physiology and ecology and his specialist interest is in the symbioses between roots and fungi, whereby plants gain their nutrients. He has supervised more than 50 PhD students in these areas and has published over 200 papers during his career.
Sir David, said: "I am delighted to receive this honour and am also truly humbled. I consider this an honour not only for myself but for the University, my department and the colleagues I work with. As an academic, the University of Sheffield, which has a reputation for world-class research, has provided me with an excellent environment in which to develop my scientific interests. I am extremely grateful for this and to the many friends who have supported me over the years in Sheffield."
Professor Malcolm Press, Head of the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield, said: " Sir David is a rare example of somebody who is not only an international leading research scientist but also somebody who gives selflessly of his time for the benefit of UK Science as a whole."
