Registering for Courses
When Can I Choose My Courses?
You are advised to have made a provisional choice of courses before arriving in the UK.
Please also have some reserve choices in case some of them are no longer available when you arrive.
How Can I Choose My Courses?
Course information, including timetables and the directory of modules can be found here:
You are also advised to read the web pages of your host academic department. A full list of academic departments can be found here:
Full List of Academic Departments
How many credits must I sign up for?
- If you are spending one semester only at the University of Sheffield, you must sign up for a maximum of 60 Sheffield credits (30 ECTS credits)
- Please note that you are obliged to choose 100% of your modules from your host academic department, unless you are coming to study with us via a Modern Languages exchange agreement
I need to register for more/less credits!
- More than 60 Sheffield credits (30 ECTS) per semester is considered too high a workload
- The absolute minimum number of credits you can register for is 40 Sheffield credits (20 ECTS)
- If you need to register for less than 60 Sheffield credits, you must bring with you a letter from your home university supporting this and present it to a member of staff at the registration event
Important Information for Students Coming to Study English
Please note that there are only a few universities which have a DIRECT Erasmus exchange agreement with our School of English.
They are:
- University of Helsinki, Finland
- Université François-Rabelais, Tours, France
- Freidrich-Schiller-Universitat Jena, Germany
- Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands
- University of Gdansk, Poland
- Stockholm University, Sweden
- Universitat Zurich, Switzerland
If you are coming to study English in Sheffield and you are NOT from one of the above universities, please note the following:
- Your host department in Sheffield is the corresponding Modern Languages department. For example, French students are looked after by the French Department, German students by Germanic Studies and so on
- There are restrictions on the modules that you can choose from the School of English
English Courses for Modern Languages Erasmus Students
Some English courses have been specially designed for incoming Modern Languages Erasmus students who do not come from one of the universities listed above.
The most up-to-date list we have can be found below:

Are there course restrictions in other departments?
Most courses are open to Erasmus students, but you are likely to be advised against choosing level 3 (final year) modules.
Some academic departments have a restricted list of modules available to incoming Erasmus students due to popular demand:
Restricted Management Modules (PDF, 26.3 KB)
Restricted Journalism Modules (PDF, 17.8 KB)
Restricted Politics Modules (PDF, 12.2 KB)
Restricted History Modules (PDF, 22.9 KB)
Postgraduate (Masters) Level Modules
If you are an undergraduate (Bachelor) student, you are generally advised against signing up for postgraduate (Masters) modules due to the difficulty level.
Please note also that the assessment deadline for postgraduate modules is much later than it is for undergraduate modules. See our 'Assessment of Work' section for further advice on this.
Questions Concerning Module Choices?
Please note that each participating department has an Erasmus tutor, who is your first point of contact for all academic queries.
A list of all the departmental Erasmus tutors can found here:
