Between 1975 and 1998 I worked in non mainstream theatre as a performer, writer and facilitator. This work took place for the most part at community level, often within political and activist contexts. My experiences, both in Britain and in the north of Ireland during the 'Troubles', formed the basis of my PhD, which I began as a mature student in 1996.
I began teaching part time in the department in 1998, and in 1999 I was offered a Teaching Fellowship, becoming a full time member of staff in 2004. After three years as Director of Drama, I have recently taken over as the Admissions Tutor for English Literature.
All my teaching is theatre based. I convene the level one course, Introduction to Theatre, and teach practical drama at levels two and three, and on the MA in Theatre and Performance. I co-ordinate the School of English theatre in education programme, Acting Together, a volunteer project which creates programmes for children in local inner city schools.
I have published in the fields of Irish resistance and liberation theatres, radical historiography, applied theatre and I recently authored a major study on the social impact of theatre for Arts Council England and the Independent Theatre Council. Other interests include twentieth century acting methods and practice as research.
