The ELTC offers a range of part-time English language classes to both existing University of Sheffield students and staff, as well as members of the public. The classes are at different levels and some can prepare you for an internationally recognised English language test.

If you are an existing student at the University of Sheffield on a degree course, you may also take some free part-time English language classes designed to support you academic study. YOU MUST BE A DEGREE LEVEL STUDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY TO JOIN THESE CLASSES.

Part-time Cambridge ESOL Preparation Classes
Open to all, students, staff and members of the public, the ELTC offers fee-paying part-time classes to improve your English and prepare for an internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL exam. The ELTC is authorised to run University of Cambridge ESOL exams. All our staff are qualified and experienced English language teachers. Our Centre is very modern, with spacious classrooms equipped with the latest technology and learning resources. |
Levels
We currently offer classes at 4 different levels preparing for 4 different University of Cambridge ESOL exams, which are optional at the end of your course. Furthermore, you can take your University of Cambridge ESOL exam at the ELTC here in Sheffield.
Our current part-time classes are:
1) Intermediate: Cambridge English: Preliminary (PET)
PET Cambridge English: Preliminary uses real-life situations that are especially designed to help you understand factual information and show awareness of opinions, attitudes and mood in both spoken and written English.
(IELTS 4.0+, CEFR B1 or equivalent)
2) Upper-Intermediate: Cambridge English: First (FCE)
FCE is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English in a variety of situations. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for initial steps into work or study in an English-speaking context.
(IELTS 5.5+, CEFR B2 or equivalent)
3) Advanced: Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)
CAE is a high-level qualification that is officially recognised by universities, employers and governments around the world and shows the level of English required for demanding academic and professional settings.
(IELTS 6.5+, CEFR C1 or equivalent)
4) Post-Advanced: Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)
CPE is Cambridge ESOL's highest level exam. It is aimed at people who use English for professional or study purposes that require a highly developed language competence. It is also demonstrates holders can expertly manipulate the English language.
(IETLS 8.0+, CEFR C2 or equivalent)

Dates and Times
A 10-week course for all levels, from 5.30-7.00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, runs twice a year. The next course starts in February 2012.
Start Date: Monday 20th February 2012
End Date: Wednesday 16th May 2012
Exam Date (optional): PET/FCE = Saturday 19th May 2012
CAE/CPE = Saturday 12th May 2012
Speaking exams will be held in the week between 12th-19th May (TBC).
Further courses will be offered from September to December 2012. |
Enrolment
Applications should be received by Monday 13th February. You may only miss the first week of the course and the last date of entry is 27th February.
To enrol for a place on the course, you now need to come one of the course registration evenings and bring any evidence of your English level (e.g. English certificate) if you have any. You will complete a written task and have a spoken interview. We will then discuss with you which class and Cambridge exam is best suited to you, taking in to account your preference.

You can arrive any time between 5 - 6pm and the process takes up to an hour.

Fees
Fees for all levels are £325 including tuition, course book, practice test resources and extra study materials. You will also receive a University of Sheffield student card, giving you access to the University facilities, including library and computer systems, for the duration of the course.
If you enter for the optional Cambridge ESOL exam at the ELTC, you must also pay a Cambridge exam fee. Currently exam fees are £105.
All fees must be paid in advance before you start the course.
