Key Facts - Credit-bearing Modules

Description
The ELTC offers English Language credit-bearing modules to ERASMUS and Study Abroad students in both semesters one and two.

The modules are split into 3 areas of English language study;

1) English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
2) English Language and Culture (ELC)
3) English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

ALL THE MODULES HAVE 'LANGUAGE' AS THEIR MAIN AIM. MOST WILL INCLUDE THE PRACTICE OF LANGUAGE SKILLS AS THEIR MAIN FOCUS. The classes will use a communicative approach to language teaching and encourage students to fully participate in the English language.
Programme Objectives
The modules includes the aims of:

EFL
-the improvement of English language skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
- to provide a topic-based course that focuses on areas on British society and culture
-encourage students to fully participate in the English language and culture.

In addition at each level:

Upper-intermediate
-understand the main ideas in complex pieces of writing
-keep up a conversation on a fairly wide range of topics, expressing opinions and presenting arguments
-produce clear, detailed writing, expressing opinions and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of different points of view.

Advanced
-read quickly enough to cope with an academic course
-understand complex opinions
-produce clear, well structured and detailed pieces of writing
-express themselves well with a good degree of fluency
-use English flexibly for social, professional and academic purposes.

Proficiency
-understand with ease virtually everything they hear and read
-make accurate and complete notes during a presentation
-understand colloquial asides
-talk about complex and sensitive issues without awkwardness
-express themselves precisely and fluently.

ELC - Literature, News Media and/or Film
-the close study of specific genres of the English language
-the encouragement of language learning through specific cultural areas
-to facilitate the improvement of discussion, critical thinking and essay/report writing skills.
-to investigate, present and discuss a specific area of the student's topic and linguistic interest.
-to allow the extension of the range of vocabulary, genre and structure of English in relation to a particular area of culture.

EAP (Reading and Writing)
-to provide practice in developing academic reading and writing skills in a supportive context
-to develop students' key reading skills, in particular to improve their reading speed
-to develop students' understanding of the organisation and style of written academic English
-to provide opportunities for students to apply their skills and understanding to authentic academic texts
-to improve students' command of key language skills, including grammar, vocabulary, organisation, cohesion and style, in their own writing
-to provide practice in accurate referencing and bibliography writing and to raise awareness of the importance of avoiding plagiarism
-to provide guidance on the stages of preparing and writing an academic text
-to provide an opportunity for students to put their skills into practice under examination conditions

EAP (Speaking and Listening)
-to provide practice in developing academic listening and speaking skills in a supportive context;
-to develop students' key listening skills, including listening for gist, listening for detail, note-taking, recognising discourse markers, in a variety of contexts, such as lecture, seminar group, tutorial, one-to-one, to simulate an academic situation;
-to develop students' key speaking skills, including both fluency and accuracy, but with the main emphasis on developing their confidence to express themselves in a variety of academic contexts;
-to develop students' familiarity with typical discussion strategies;
-to strengthen students' confidence in using the above strategies through frequent use;
-to give each student an opportunity to give a short presentation.

Level EFL (Upper-intermediate): at least 6.0 in IELTS, FCE (B), TOEFL IBT 87, CEF mid B2 or equivalent.
EFL (Advanced): at least 6.5 in IELTS, CAE (C), TOEFL IBT 91, CEF low C1 or equivalent.
EFL (Proficiency): at least 7.5 in IELTS, CAE (A), TOEFL IBT 113, CEF low C2 or equivalent.
ELC (Literature): at least 6.0 in IELTS, FCE (B), TOEFL IBT 79, CEF mid B2 or equivalent and no more than 7.0 in IELTS, CAE (B), TOEFL IBT 100, CEF C1 or equivalent.
ELC (News Media/Film): at least 6.5 in IELTS, CAE (C), TOEFL IBT 91, CEF low C1 or equivalent.
EAP: at least 6.0 in IELTS, FCE (B), TOEFL IBT 79, CEF mid B2 or equivalent and now more than 7.0 in IELTS, CAE (B), TOEFL IBT 100, CEF C1 or equivalent.
Proof of English Placement Test and Evidence of English level

Rooms ELTC rooms: specifically designed language classrooms with seating for a maximum of 25 students, equipped with audio-visual and computer technologies (interactive whiteboards).
