Space Management
Kay Green and Laura Carr provide directional strategy for the estate advising, in conjunction with the Estates Surveyor, on new acquisitions and disposals and provide key information for the Estates and Capital Sub Group(ECSG) which reports to the Facilities Management Committee.
So what does the team do?
At a strategic level the Team is involved in the initial planning stages of major projects providing advice and information on the options available, the enabling works required and the sequential moves or migrations that might result.
Getting in contact?
At a Departmental level, the first contact from Departments is when they have a problem; a need for more space for new starters or new equipment. The Team´s first response is to advise departments on how to make the most of the space they already occupy. This will involve visiting the department, and working with them, to see what course of action may be appropriate. This might involve some reorganization of departmental activities or reconfiguration of space.
Only when it has been demonstrated that there are no other avenues open will options for additional space be explored and recommendations made to ESAG for approval. The implementation of any changes will be taken forward by Estates & Facilities Management.
Forward Space Planning
The area of forward space planning is one we are keen to improve through the development of space guidelines and better and earlier liaison with the Corporate Planning Office.
It is important that the Team is aware of new developments in Teaching and Research as we are keen to strengthen the link between the academic strategy and estate strategy. Departments need to be aware that the requirement for space for new appointments, teaching programmes and research projects must be flagged up at the proposal stage to avoid the current position where planning is being done on a retrospective basis. In this way, it is hoped to improve service delivery to all our customers.
