David T. D. Childs received the B.Sc. degree in physics, the. M.Sc. degree in Semiconductor Science and Technology, and the Ph.D. degree from Imperial College, London in 1996, 1997, and 2002, respectively. He was then with the R&D Department of Marconi Optical Components and Bookham at the Caswell Semiconductor Research and Fabrication Facility until 2006, where he was involved in development of a range of telecoms lasers. He is currently with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, U.K., where he is engaged in applying quantum dot devices to applications such as optical communications to biomedical imaging, and on high power surface emitting laser for mode-locking.
