Whilst on leave from Fujitsu Labs, he obtained his PhD from The University of Sheffield in 1980. He was subsequently promoted to Research Fellow at Fujitsu Labs, prior to moving to lead his own group at the Femtosecond Technology Research Association (FESTA), Tsukuba, Japan. He subsequently obtained a Professorship at The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Kobe University, Japan.
He is currently the recipient of a Leverhulme Visiting Professorship, engaged in various areas of work within the Semiconductor Materials and Devices Group.
